BLACK SURFERS L1005391B.jpg
NEW YORK, NEW YORK: AIDEN WOODHOUSE, a teen surfer, of the East Coast chapter of the Black Surfing Association holds his surf board after a paddle-out in the Rockaway Beach, Queens Neighborhood in New York, New York. Nearly a hundred surfers participated in he paddle-out in honor of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by police on March 13, 2020 in Louisville, KY, while sleeping in her bed. This is the fourth paddle-out for racial justice the Black Surfing Association has held this summer. The paddle-out is a traditional Hawaiian floating memorial held in the ocean a few yards from shore to honor someone they cherished and often carry flowers or on their surf boards and in their teeth to place where they will celebrate someone’s life.
